Easy Strawberry Agua Fresca is a simple, Mexican-style, refreshing summer drink made with strawberries, sugar, water and lime juice. Agua de Fresca is a common drink across Mexica and I have heard that various fruits flavoured agua fresca are sold on streets during summer.
What is Strawberry Agua Fresca
Agua Fresca translates freshwater or cool water in Mexican. It is a non-alcoholic beverage prepared using different types of fruits or seeds and sold across Mexico and other South American countries during summer.
Typically, agua fresca is a blend of fruit, water and sugar. I learned about agua fresca during our summer picnic with friends in the United States. My friend prepared it using watermelon and flavoured it with mint leaves and lime wedges.
I replaced watermelon with strawberry and served it with ice cubes. I always prepare this in slightly large quantities and store it in the refrigerator during the strawberry season. It is simple, refreshing and easy to make recipe. I am sure you never go back to store-bought drinks once you taste it.
Ingredients & Variations
Ingredients
Strawberries: Fresh and sweet strawberries are best for this recipe. Use the season’s best strawberries.
Water: I used cold water to dilute the strawberry puree.
Sugar: I used organic cane sugar. All type of sugar or any sweetener works well in this recipe.
Lime: I always love the slight touch of tanginess from lime and always use lime in my agua frescas. Adjust the quantity based on the tanginess of the fruit you use.
Variations
We can make many variations of agua frescas just by slightly changing the basic recipe. Horchata and Jamaica are the popular types of agua fresca. Substitute strawberries with watermelon, pineapple, tamarind and chia seeds for other variations.
