Though you can play around with the quantity, you should not compromise on the freshness of each ingredient in this salad recipe for the best results.
Roasted Chana Dal: Roasted chana dal available from Indian supermarkets is used in this recipe. Make sure it is crisp and powdery while eating it. Roasted gram dal, roasted dalia split and pottukadalai are the other names. Both skinless whole roasted chana dal or split chana dal works well in this recipe.
Shallots: Red Shallots are best for this recipe. But, It can be substituted with red onion.
Other Ingredients: Use fresh green chillies, fresh curry leaves are used. I added cumin seeds, table salt and organic gingelly oil at the end.
Variations
Variations to this salad make it a completely new recipe. However, accessing fresh ingredients across the world is not possible all the time. so, when you don’t access the fresh ingredients, yet want to enjoy this salad, then just mix red chilli powder/paprika in place of onion, green chilli and curry leaves. The remaining ingredients go as usual. It gives a very similar taste to the one that was prepared using fresh ingredients.

How to make Roasted Chana Dal Salad – Step by Step
- In a small bowl, add roasted channa dal to it. Always prepare this salad just before serving.
- To this bowl, add the finely chopped shallots. If you do not have shallots, use finely chopped red onion. Usually for 1 cup of roasted chana dal, add 1/4 cup red onion. If you like more onion in your salad, feel free to add it.
- Furthermore, wash and wipe green chilli and curry leaves. Make sure there is no water content and chop it finely. Adjust the chopped green chilli quantity based on the spice level you like.
- Next, finely chopped curry leaves go to this bowl.
- Next to this, take cumin in between your palms, rub it and add it to the salad. you can also directly add cumin to the salad. But crushing or rubbing the cumin seeds adds a nice flavor to the salad.
- Add salt to taste. Finally, add gingelly oil. Do not replace this oil with any other oil. Use gingelly oil or leave it as-is.
- Mix well using a spoon. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Feel free to adjust each ingredient according to your personal preference.
- Serve immediately.
Storage & Serving Suggestions
The Roasted chana dal quickly gets exposed to the moisture content from the onion. It loses its crispiness and becomes hard to munch if it’s served later. Preparing this salad in small quantities is always a best practice to serve.
